Gentle Hands Story for Kids: Benny's Gentle Paws

Benny's Gentle Paws is a two-and-a-half-minute animated picture-book story for children aged 3 to 7. Benny the bear cub has the biggest, strongest paws in Hushberry Cove, and he wants to catch a bubble more than anything. But every grab goes POP! Then a happy hug squeezes his friend Luna too tight. With one quiet question from Grandpa Bear, Benny works out a softer way on his own. The story ends with a short sing-along.

It is made for kids. This page has no ads, no tracking and no sign-up, and it collects nothing from children.

For parents and teachers: what the story teaches

Watch together: a few ideas

3 questions to talk about after watching

  1. How did Luna feel when Benny squeezed too tight? How could you tell?
  2. How did Benny feel about his big paws? What helped him feel better?
  3. Can you show a soft, gentle touch? What could you touch gently today?

A short activity: soft paws

You need a bowl of water, a small cup and a towel (or a dry soft toy and a scarf for a quieter version), and one to five children. About 10 minutes.

  1. Sit in a circle. Show your open hand and say together, "Soft, open, still."
  2. Try a fast grab at the air, then a slow open hand. Ask: "Which one feels like Benny's paws at the start? Which one feels like the end?"
  3. Take turns resting a hand flat and still on a soft toy or scarf, as gently as holding a bubble. Say "Gentle paws, soft and slow" as each child has a turn.
  4. For the water version, hold a cupped hand still over the bowl and watch the ripples settle.
  5. Afterwards, ask: "What did your hands do to be gentle?"

Always ask before a hug. "Can I give you a hug?" is a good habit, and a child can say no.

The story in brief

Benny watches Bubbles the otter blow shiny bubbles from her little pot. One bubble sits still on the wet rim, and Benny wants to catch one more than anything. His big paws clap... POP! His giant bear hug... POP! Both times he laughs, but both times there is nothing left. Then Luna pats his arm, and Benny hugs her fast and tight. Her glasses go wonky. "Too tight, Benny," she says, and the friends step back. Benny hides his paws and feels sad. Grandpa Bear sits down with a big "OOF" and asks, "Did any bubble stay?" Benny remembers the bubble on the wet pot. He asks "Please?", dips his paw and holds it open and very still. A bubble floats down and stays. Then Benny hugs Luna again, soft and slow, and she says, "Just right!" The story ends with a sung refrain, "Gentle paws go soft and slow!"
