Sharing Is Caring: Pip's Kite | Hushberry Cove Stories for Kids

About this story

Pip the fox has a brand-new yellow kite, as yellow as his scarf. When Bubbles the otter asks for a turn, Pip hugs the kite tight and says "Mine!" He flies it high all by himself, but when he turns to show his friends, nobody is there. Pip feels lonely.

Grandpa Bear sits down beside him and asks three gentle questions. Pip works out the answer on his own: kites are better with friends. He walks down to the beach, says sorry, and shares. Bubbles, Benny and Luna each take a turn, and the kite comes back to Pip every time.

It is a short, funny picture-book story for children aged 3 to 7, told by one warm narrator, and it ends with a sing-along.

For parents and teachers: what the episode teaches

There are no villains and nothing scary. The worst moment is a small disappointment, and the kite lands softly.

Three questions to talk about

  1. How did Bubbles' face look when Pip said "Mine!" How do you think she felt?
  2. Why did Pip feel lonely when he flew the kite all by himself?
  3. What is something you could share with a friend or someone at home today? How would you take turns?

Tip: give your child a moment to answer before you say anything. Grandpa Bear only asks questions in the story, and it works just as well at home.

A short activity: the turn-taking kite

You need a paper kite shape, a ribbon or length of wool, and two or more people. This takes about 10 minutes.

  1. Hold the kite and sing together: "Up, up, up went the yellow kite!"
  2. Run or walk slowly around the room with the kite trailing behind you.
  3. Pass it to the next person and say "Your turn!" Let each person have a go.
  4. Sing "Round and round" as it goes round the circle, and cheer when it comes back to the first person.

No paper kite? A scarf works well. For a group, count slowly to ten for each turn so everyone knows how long a turn lasts.
